As the weather heats up, the temptation to rock some braids increases! Braids are versatile and require delicate care although they’re protective styles. If you want them to thrive for 8 weeks, here are some tips to keep them fresh and sleek!
1) Sleep with Satin
We’ve been through this! Satin protects your hair from all sorts of tension. It doesn’t matter if you got braids with extensions or your natural hair, satin is a necessity. Satin will preserve your braids for an extended period and keep them moisturized. Satin pillowcases are a great way to preserve your hair if bonnets and scarves aren’t, you’re forte.
2) Hydrate Your Scalp!
To hydrate your scalp, you need water. The waiting period between washes can leave your scalp feeling dry and brittle. Hydrate your scalp with water to prevent buildup from excessive product use. Water will do the trick every time because nothing hydrates better than H2O. If you’re feeling some itchiness and in need of quick relief, lightweight sprays such as Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier and Strands of Faith Conditioning Refresher Spray help with irritation and replenishment. But again, please don’t forget to add some water prior to spraying product on the scalp!
3) Wash your hair every WEEK
Although your hair is braided, it requires the same love and attention as normal. Washing your hair with braids may seem tricky, but it’s quite simple. Rub your scalp with the pads of your fingers in gentle circular motions. A scalp massage brush can also be helpful but be mindful of much pressure you’re applying to your scalp.
Shampoo bottles that are designed for easy application to the scalp are a recommended choice. Curl Dynasty’s Cocoa Mint Shampoo and Alikay Naturals’ Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo are among the vast options to choose from! They’re both gentle and perfect for easily washing the scalp!
4) Know your limits
It’s incredibly tempting to wear your hair in high ponytails, top-knot buns, various other styles that flex the versatility of braids. Beware to not overdo it! Moderation is beautiful so know your limits in styling. Wearing your braids in a consistent, tight style will eventually strain your roots and loosen the braids. The straining of the roots can weaken your hairline and your braids will wear and tear a lot faster.
You should also be mindful of wearing your braids for too long. Longer than 8 weeks is pushing it, so give your hair a break! Take a break after 8 weeks and wait for 2 weeks before you install a new set.
Braids are one of the best protective styles! Unfortunately, they can also do some damage if they’re not properly kept. Be gentle and attentive, your braids will stay pleased and so will your scalp!
