Hair Styling Practices You Should Stop NOW Part. 2

Posted by Taylor Tate on

I’m back for Part Two! I don’t think I screamed at y’all enough so it’s time to finish this series with some more simple practices that will ensure your hair remains protected and healthy! We’re gonna keep it short and simple to not waste any more of your time with my persistence.

1) Stop waiting so long.

When it’s time, it’s time. Let go of those damaged goods and encourage stronger, healthier growth that’s not ruined by split ends. Trimming your hair eliminates the threat of new growth being tainted. Yes, your hair will continue to grow but at what cost? Why would you want longer hair that’s bone dry and brittle? Length retention will be a chore because your hair will literally break off and be left damaged due to the lack of trimming.  Before you even get to the point, go ahead, and get your hair trimmed every 3 to 4 months to ensure your length is maintained in all its healthy glory.

2) Stop finger detangling

When you’re tired and ready to get Wash Day over with, it’s tempting to utilize finger detangling. It’s presumably faster and “healthier” but neither myth is true. Although it’s ok to finger detangling, it’s not optimal. Fairy knots will plaque your hair until the end of time and you’ll regret doing so! Your hair will also take longer to detangle because the bristles of brushes eliminate more tangles and optimize handling the ends where most tangles manifest.

The Kurls and Detangler Paddle Comb by KAZMALEJE takes the stress out of detangling by allowing you to centralize your focus on each section of your hair without strain. The Flex Brush by CurlMix is also just as good to accelerate any detangling you wish to conquer. Save yourself the pain of fairy knots and just use a brush that’s as flexible as you need it to be.

3) Stop wearing protective styles all the time!

Protective styles are beautiful but when wore excessively, your hair and scalp will suffer because they need to breathe! Most protective styles manipulate the hair and can even present you from being able to wash your hair in all its entirety. To decrease the risk of breakage and improper cleansing, allow your hair to be natural in between protective styles.

4) Stop using oil as a form of hydration

I will continue to stay because it's the literal truth. Oil will NOT moisturize. They are sealants that seal in moisture that’s already been applied via water. Nothing hydrates better than H2O. It’s pure unfiltered hydration, it’s literally in the name. Oils can give the illusion of hydrated hair, but it’s short lived. Oils don’t fully penetrate the follicle, rather it sits on top of the strand to encourage nasty buildup that promotes dandruff, dryness, and breakage. Be mindful of what oils you use and how you apply them if anything!

Ok, that’s it for now! From this point going forward, I’m hoping y’all heed my advice and implement these simple changes into your routine. Styling practices aren’t difficult to switch up so go ahead and do so. You’ll be shocked by how much healthier your hair becomes!
